Favorite memory at Saint Mary’s: There’s way too many small memories that come together to define my time at Saint Mary’s to choose a single moment, but my favorite experience that I have had would be the women’s soccer trip to the United Kingdom my freshman year. It was incredible to play British teams and travel Europe with my team and coaches. I had never had the opportunity to go abroad at that point, and Saint Mary’s allowed me to do that for the first time with 20 of my best friends.
Plans after graduation: I’m attending George Washington University School of Law in Washington, D.C. Following law school, I hope to work in the public sector, and hopefully one day as a judge.
Message to Saint Mary’s community: I am so incredibly grateful for the faculty, staff, administrators, classmates, teammates, and friends who have made my last four years incredible. I had no idea what to expect moving across the country to Minnesota, and Saint Mary’s has exceeded all of my expectations.

Message to Saint Mary’s community: Saint Mary’s is such a special place! I am greatly going to miss the bond of the close-knit community. Lastly, a special thank you to my adviser, Dr. Christine Beech, for her continuous guidance, support, and mentorship — you are the best!

Favorite memory at Saint Mary’s: One of the most favorite memories I have at Saint Mary’s is living in Hillside sophomore year and watching movies in the classroom. We would fire up the projector and have our own little movie theater. I also have to throw in my semester abroad in London with the junior theatre class as a favorite memory; we saw so much theatre and were able to bond so much over the course of four months.
Plans after graduation: Currently, the theatre industry is on hold, however, I plan to go back to the Twin Cities and start auditioning for companies once everything is safe to open back up. Eventually, I would love to move to Vancouver to start an acting career there!
Message to Saint Mary’s community: The community at Saint Mary’s has been one I have been honored to be a part of; the faculty and staff care so much about the students and our success, which is prominent in any classroom. The people and connections I have made throughout the last four years are ones that I hold near and dear to my heart.

Favorite memory at Saint Mary’s: My favorite memory of my time at Saint Mary’s was when the Saint Theresa and Saint Peter’s Leadership Club brought in my favorite TedTalk speaker, Drew Dudley. I had been exposed to his TedTalk my sophomore year during orientation training where Anne Thurmer, former dean of Student Success, showed us his Lollipop Moment TedTalk. I instantly became invested in his leadership philosophy and the club managed to host him for an event. I was able to give him a tour of campus, have lunch with him, and introduce him with David French, my co-president. This was hands-down my favorite memory at Saint Mary’s.
Plans after graduation: I will be working in the senior living industry post-graduation. Within the next 3-5 years, I hope to become an executive director of my own assisted living and memory care community. I also hope to travel a little before life gets too hectic.

Favorite memory at Saint Mary’s: There have been so many good memories at Saint Mary’s that will stick with me forever, but the one that sticks out was freshman year when I was planning on transferring to a different school (already got accepted and got housing and everything) and all of my friends convinced me to stay because they didn’t want me to leave. Four years later, and it was the single greatest decision I have ever made. There have been too many memories to count, and I couldn’t see myself being anywhere else, so I owe it all to my friends.
Plans after graduation: I will be moving out to Boston this summer after accepting a job as an ABA classroom counselor at Melmark New England where I will be working with students ages 3-22 that have been diagnosed with different mental disorders. After working there for a year or two, I am planning on going to graduate school for clinical psychology.
Message to Saint Mary’s community: First and foremost, I would like to thank the Saint Mary’s staff that I have had the privilege to work with these past four years. Dr. Seebach, thank you for being my adviser and mentor all of these years; I don’t know where I would be without your help. The rest of the psychology professors, you guys were always willing to go above and beyond to make sure I succeeded in my classes and anything else I was doing. Favorite memory at Saint Mary’s: My all time favorite memory from Saint Mary’s was getting to travel to South Africa my freshman year with the women’s basketball, fastpitch, and volleyball teams. Aside from that trip, I’ve loved playing on the basketball team at Saint Mary’s, going to bonfires in the bluffs with friends, cheering on the different sports teams, and wearing my Zubaz every Friday around campus.
Plans after graduation: I will spend the summer working at a day camp and coaching an AAU basketball team before beginning my teaching career in the fall at Osceola High School. I’ll be teaching algebra 1, algebra 2, and geometry.

To Dr. Mr. Sorvaag, you inspire me everyday to be a leader and to use my life to make a difference. To Joe Dulak, thank you for giving me the opportunity to grow as a PLA and tutor the last four years. Classmates, faculty, staff, thank you for your authenticity, vulnerability, and courage that has made this community what it is. IT Department works to improve Wi-Fi on Winona Campus
The IT Department is collaborating with the Student Senate to improve Wi-Fi throughout the Winona Campus and will be making some upgrades over the summer. If you are aware of any areas that lack signal or have poor quality Wi-Fi, please complete this form so we can work to prioritize our improvements. It should only take a few minutes.
As a reminder here are a few tips and tricks for the Saint Mary’s Wi-Fi:
- SMUMN-Secure should be used by Windows, Mac, IOS, Droid, or any other cell phone device.
- The Clearpass Agent is required to connect to the SMUMN-Secure network from a windows device and must be downloaded and installed. The Clearpass Agent is used to verify that antivirus and Windows updates are installed to help protect all devices using the SMUMN-Secure network from viruses/malware.
- When making a global password change via the portal, it is required to forget or remove the existing SMUMN-Secure network and then re-add using the new credentials.
- SMUMN-Open should be used for temporary guest access and for device access such as Roku, Firestick, Alexa, wireless TVs, etc. The wireless Mac address of these devices needs to be registered into clearpass.smumn.edu/guest
. - Wired devices also require registration of the devices wired mac address into clearpass.smumn.edu/guest
. Registration of the device will keep the device in registration throughout the school year, eliminating the need to re-login after the allowed time frame. - We recommend all gaming consoles be connected via a wired connection to provide the lowest latency and the best possible user experience. Added latency is inherent with all wireless systems which are unnoticeable for most applications but can be very noticeable when gaming.
- If you have Wi-Fi issues, please contact the IT HelpDesk either by calling 507-457-7800 and choosing option 1, by emailing helpdesk@smumn.edu, or by stopping by our office in the basement of Hendrickson Hall.
Remember, if we don’t know you have an issue, we can’t help fix it. Your responses on this survey will help us make improvements to the campus wifi and are greatly appreciated.
Finals and 24-hour quiet hours
As the end of semester nears, please be mindful that 24-hour quiet hours are in effect beginning Saturday, May 1, at 9 p.m. These will be in effect through Thursday, May 6, at 2 p.m. — the last day of finals.
Additionally, due to the personal need for an environment conducive to academics and extra consideration for fellow students during finals, violations of the alcohol policy or quiet hours by students during this time may result in additional consequences, including a $100 fine.

Mailroom end-of-the-year reminders
With the end of the academic year quickly approaching, we ask that you take some simple steps to ensure that your mail and packages continue to reach you:
- Check and empty your mailbox before departing for summer.
- Check with the mailroom for any unclaimed packages.
- Provide the mailroom with a preferred forwarding address.
For graduating students or those who are not returning to Saint Mary’s, contact frequent correspondents (financial institutions, magazine subscriptions, etc.) to change your address. Saint Mary’s is considered a business per postal regulations, an individual may NOT file a change of address form directly with the U.S. Postal Service.
On Monday, May 10, the mailroom will empty mailboxes. First class mail will be forwarded to the address you provide or the home address the university has on file. We cannot forward magazines, junk mail, or campus mail. For international students intending to return, we will retain mail and packages for you.
It is recommended you check and change your auto default shipping address with businesses to ensure your packages arrive to the correct address.
Also beginning May 10, the university will no longer accept packages for students not approved to be on campus for the summer. Per policy, UPS and FedEx do not allow forwarding of packages. We will attempt to re-ship them if you provide the mailroom with a pre-paid shipping label. If not, they will be retained for your return to campus. PDF form is acceptable and the file must be emailed directly to the mailroom at mailroom@SMUMN.edu. The U.S. Postal Service does allow no cost forwarding on select parcels and will collect any postage due upon receipt. We will forward these at your request.
With questions, please contact Neal Nixon, mailroom coordinator, at 507-457-1571 or mailroom@SMUMN.edu.
Have a safe and wonderful summer!
Building safe online spaces for Sexual Assault Awareness Month
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) is focusing this month on “We Can Build Safe Online Spaces.” This campaign highlights how to build respectful online communities. According to the NSVRC, “Behaviors or actions like sexist jokes, victim-blaming language or comments may seem like not that big of a deal, but they contribute to the same way of thinking that fuels violence. Although they only reflect the point of view of the person making them, their public visibility normalizes not taking sexual abuse seriously.
The reality is that the digital world is not separate from in-person spaces. They both make up the world we live in, and the impact of our actions can be just the same. If you wouldn’t do or say something to someone in person, then you shouldn’t say it to them online.
We can step in when we observe harmful behaviors online:
- Report inappropriate content if you see sensitive or violent content on a social media platform, you can report it to the platform it was shared on (Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, etc.) in order to have it flagged or removed. Different platforms have their own guidelines on what counts as inappropriate and what actions they will take, but that process starts with you making a report.
- Speak out when you see harmful comments. When you see comments that blame victims for what happened to them, you can respond by refocusing accountability on the perpetrator. While you might not change the mind of the person who left the comment, others will see that not everyone agrees with them.
- Show your support to victims of online harassment. Check in with the person that comments have been directed at to show your support. Or consider volunteering to be a moderator in certain contexts to help prevent future harassment.
When all of us see our role in keeping others safe online by stepping in when we see harmful content or comments, we can create an environment where this type of content cannot thrive.
