Saint Mary’s ranks No. 3 for ‘best value’ according to U.S. News & World Report

Saint Mary’s ranks No. 3 for ‘best value’ according to U.S. News & World Report

Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota ranked No. 3 in the “Best Value” category among all Regional Universities in the Midwest — and No. 1 among all Minnesota universities in this category — according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2022 ratings.

According to criteria, the Best Value calculation takes into account the school’s academic quality and the net cost of attendance for a student who received the average level of need-based financial aid. According to U.S. News, “The higher the quality of the program and the lower the cost, the better the deal.”

Additionally, the university was ranked No. 34 in the Best Regional Universities of the Midwest category. The ranking positions Saint Mary’s in the top 20% of the 157 schools listed in this category and as third among all Minnesota universities in this category.

“We appreciate these rankings because we know U.S. News & World Report is a source many students and families look to when comparing higher education institutions,” said Father James P. Burns, president of Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. “The report includes such areas as retention and graduation rates, strength of faculty, and employment outcomes, all of which are topics important to students, their families, and all of us at Saint Mary’s. It’s imperative for us to be constantly improving in order to provide the best possible formative and educational experience.”

Other lists Saint Mary’s was included in were No. 41 in Regional Midwest Universities in Best Colleges for Veterans – web exclusive list and No. 68 in Regional Midwest Universities for Social Mobility.

Community invited to free outdoor concert

Community invited to free outdoor concert

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary’s University Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble will perform a free Family Weekend concert at its Winona Campus plaza at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25.

Jazz Ensemble will start the program with an assortment of favorites plus a preview of themes from their fall and spring events. The Concert Band portion of the program will include John Philip Sousa’s march “Our Flirtation” and a world premiere composition by A. Eric Heukeshoven, director of jazz studies, entitled “My Music Reaches to the Sky.”

Grab a chair or bring a blanket and support Saint Mary’s student musicians in an afternoon of socially-distanced music. Due to on-going COVID-19 restrictions, the performance will be canceled in the event of rain.

For more information, contact Heukeshoven at 507-457-7292 or eheukesh@smumn.edu.

“My Music Reaches to the Sky” is based on four authentic indigenous melodies from the Chippewa tribes of northern Minnesota and Wisconsin. The melodies were collected and transcribed by Frances Densmore — a native of Red Wing, MN — in the early 1900s and published by the Smithsonian Institution. The piece will include a flute solo by Janet Heukeshoven, DMA, and be conducted by Patrick O’Shea, DMA, both of Saint Mary’s Music Department. Authentic indigenous percussion instruments will also be featured, such as the buffalo drum and dance stick.

Celebrating Rosh Hashanah and the arrival of Yom Kippur

I ask the entire Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota community to join me as we wish our brothers and sisters of the Jewish faith “Shanah Tova” as they celebrated Rosh Hashanah earlier this week.

Rosh Hashanah means “head of the year” most commonly referred to as the Jewish New Year. This is the first of the two Jewish High Holy Days. Rosh Hashanah is a time of inner renewal and divine atonement and commemorates the creation of the world. It is the beginning of the “Days of Awe” – a 10-day period of introspection, prayer, and repentance that ends on Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement), on Sept. 15 this year.

One of the key principles of Catholic Social Teaching is solidarity. We are one human family! Additionally, community is the core component of the Lasallian educational mission.

Zoom participation in classes not permitted

Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota has returned to fully in-person teaching and learning in fall 2021. On the Winona Campus, courses are continuing under their regular mode of operation. As such, students are expected to attend their classes in-person. Professors are not required to provide Zoom links for class attendance to any students other than those who are in isolation or quarantine due to COVID-19 or those who are feeling ill. Students who are feeling ill should contact Health Services for consultation. Faculty may count students as absent if they join a class via a Zoom link when the student has not been approved for remote participation by the COVID-19 Case Management Team or is not attending class because they are ill.

Vaccination requirement update

As students, faculty, and staff continue to upload COVID-19 vaccination information or file exemptions in the health portal, this additional information may be helpful:

  • Use your Saint Mary’s email and password when accessing the health portal. Otherwise, appropriate forms will not be accessible to you.
  • Be sure to complete the COVID-19 vaccination form in addition to uploading your vaccination card. Some individuals have only been uploading their vaccination card. The vaccination form must also be completed.
  • Once you have submitted your vaccination card or filed your exemption, you will not receive a confirmation email. You can, however, go back into your portal later to check that the correct forms have been completed and uploaded.
  • Notary publics can be found at most banks and at most post offices. If you are in Minnesota, you can find a notary near you using Find a Notary. In Wisconsin, you can find a notary public in your area by using the WI Notary Public Search. Narrow your search by using a city and a zip code. In Illinois, you can find a notary public in your area by using the Illinois Notary Public Search. A Google search with “Find a Notary in (insert appropriate state)” will result in similar notary search services by state.

As a reminder, all students, faculty, and staff must complete the process to document their vaccination or file an exemption by Friday, Oct. 8.
