Emergency grants allocated to students under the CARES Act

The United States Congress recently passed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. As a part of this legislation, colleges and universities have been allocated federal funds to provide student emergency grants for expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to the coronavirus. Saint Mary’s University received an allocation of $830,548 for student emergency grants.

Assumption of Risk

The university hereby advises student and student acknowledges that by [participating in Activity] during the pandemic, the student may likely be exposed to COVID-19 or other risks that may result in illness, personal injury, or death, and the student understands and chooses to voluntarily [participate in Activity] and accept all risk to health that may result therefrom. Student understands and accepts that University cannot control these risks and may not be able to provide the necessary medical care that the student’s situation may require. Student understands that University is not responsible for any medical or other expenses associated with any property damage or personal injury student may sustain and that University does not maintain any insurance policy pertaining to any potential illness student may develop or other damage student may sustain. As such, student is aware that student should review personal insurance coverage. Student Voluntarily assumes full responsibility for any risks of loss, property of damage or personal injury, including death that may be sustained by student as a result of [participating in activity].
