As part of the 2018 Mid West Music Fest (MWMF), the father and son jazz trio known as H3O, featuring Eric Heukeshoven (piano), Hans Heukeshoven (vibraphone), and Max Heukeshoven (bass), will perform at 3 p.m. Saturday April 28, in Hardt’s Music, 115 E. 3rd St.

The hour-long set will feature a wide range of selections by Chick Corea, Horace Silver, Thelonius Monk, and other jazz giants. “Almost Spring” — written by Eric Heukeshoven exclusively for H3O’s first MWMF appearance — will also be premiered.

Tickets for MWMF can be purchased online at midwestmusicfest.org/tickets or at The Root Note, Deaf Ear Records, and People’s Food Co-op in La Crosse and at Midtown Foods in Winona. Tickets must be redeemed for a wristband at the ticketing hub located at the Tent Stage on the corner of 2nd and Center Streets.

About the H3O Jazz Trio

The father and son trio H3O began performing great jazz tunes together when bassist Max Heukeshoven was only 14 years old. With older brother Hans on drums and dad Eric on the piano, they were asked to play for a private pool party and haven’t stopped since!

Eric Heukeshoven is an assistant professor of music at Saint Mary’s. Hans Heukeshoven is a 2015 graduate of Saint Mary’s with degrees in music performance and computer science. Max Heukeshoven is pursuing a degree in music industry at Saint Mary’s and plans to attend law school in 2019.

H3O performs a wide variety of jazz styles. They have worked as the rhythm section for numerous area professionals including Minnesota Music Hall of Fame’s Les Fields and Dr. John Paulson.

Saint Mary’s University cordially invites you to attend the groundbreaking for the new baseball clubhouse on Tuesday, May 1.

The Cardinals will host St. John’s in a doubleheader at home on May 1. The first game will begin at 2:30 p.m. The groundbreaking ceremony will take place immediately following the second game, approximately 7 p.m., in the green space adjacent to the Gostomski Fieldhouse (left of the hockey arena entrance).

The baseball clubhouse addition is made possible through a generous lead gift from 1975 alumnus Marc Weisenburger, made in honor of his experiences at Saint Mary’s — both on and off the field — and particularly under the guidance of Coach Max Molock.

The clubhouse is part of a bigger plan for enhancing Saint Mary’s athletics, and another welcomed and visible example of what is possible on campus when generous benefactors contribute to athletic facilities and programs.

Eric Heukeshoven, Music Department, was one of three featured pianists in the dedication concert of the newly acquired Yamaha grand piano at Crucifixion Catholic Church and School in La Crescent on April 22.

Heukeshoven performed two improvised selections from his ongoing exploration of the music of jazz composer Billy Strayhorn: the haunting impressionistic ballad “A Flower is a Lovesome Thing,” and one of Strayhorn’s best-known works, “Take the ‘A’ Train.”

The Saint Mary’s Graduate School of Education hosted the State Field Directors and Coordinators Spring 2018 Conference on April 20, which gathered professionals from 20 institutions, including Walden University, Bethel University, Augsburg University, University of Minnesota (Twin Cities and Duluth), The College of St. Scholastica, Winona State University, and more.

Field placement directors and coordinators are responsible for placing student teachers into schools for their practicum experiences and student teaching. At the conference, which centered around the theme The Power of Connection: Connect, Collaborate, Innovate, participants engaged in discussion around ideas to help support marginalized teacher candidates. They collaborated with colleagues around their practice with a guest speaker and three discussion panels, engaging in conversation about cultural responsiveness and how they can increase the number of teachers of color in K-12 education.

Brother Javier Hansen, FSC, from El Paso, Texas, and Sister Marie Faustina, RSM, a Saint Mary’s student, lead a roundtable discussion with students, staff, and faculty on April 23. Brother Javier and Sister Marie were two of eight delegates selected to attend the Pre-Synod Young People, the Faith, and Vocational Discernment in Rome last month with Pope Francis.

Campus ministry and the Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary collaborated on this roundtable discussion, which was an intentional effort to create meaningful dialogue around our Lasallian mission and to empower and engage future leaders of the Church. Students had the opportunity to hear about the Pre-Synod experience and to discuss topics such as social media as a way to connect with others, vocational discernment, leadership, the call to be authentic witnesses, diversity, and the empowerment of young people in the life of the Church. As a result of student discussions, a document will be created reflecting the hopes of the young people of Saint Mary’s and will be sent to members of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops participating in the full Synod this fall.
