Actuarial Science Program is approved for UCAP-IC status
In December 2018, the Saint Mary’s actuarial program was approved by the Society of Actuaries (SOA) for UCAP-IC status (Universities & Colleges with Actuarial Programs-Introductory Curriculum). For UCAP-IC status, the program must have courses covering at least two SOA preliminary exams and approved courses for at least one VEE topic area. Right now we cover Exam P – Probability and Exam FM – Financial Mathematics and have VEE courses approved in four areas: Accounting and Finance, Corporate Finance, Economics, and Mathematical Statistics.
Most importantly, this means our program is now one of only six Minnesota actuarial programs (Mankato, Moorhead, UM-Twin Cities, UM-Duluth, St. Thomas) listed on the SOA website.

Fallon-Korb speaks to Cardinal student-athletes
Guest speaker Andrea Fallon-Korb, L.M.S.W, M.Ed., presented to Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota coaches and student-athletes on Jan. 15 in Page Theatre.
Fallon-Korb touched on maximizing performance throughout the season, managing pressure and anxiety, and improving mental toughness. There was also a question-and-answer period following her presentation.
Fallon-Korb encouraged students to change their view on stress, and rather than avoiding stress, embrace it. Those in attendance were given four ways to embrace and turn stress into a positive trait that can be used in sport performance — including identifying the source of stress and rethinking the signs associated with it as positive.
During the second half of her presentation, Fallon-Korb focused on “bouncing back” and mental toughness.
“Everyone experiences adversity,” she said. “A quick recovery sets the elite apart.”
Student-athletes were encouraged to discuss what sets resilient athletes apart from non-resilient athletes and ways to define success. Fallon-Korb stressed effective goal setting and goal mapping to facilitate changes student-athletes want to make personally or team-wise within their sport.
Fallon-Korb’s appearance at Saint Mary’s was made possible through the NCAA Division III Strategic Initiatives Grant Program.

GSS kicks off western fieldwork
During early December, GeoSpatial Services (GSS) staff members Kevin Stark and Eric Lindquist traveled to southeast New Mexico to begin wetland field verification for a Bureau of Land Management project that will eventually include eight western states. They visited selected wetland sites, including some in the Permian Basin, an area where oil and gas production is booming, which has the potential to threaten valuable wetlands. The team verified and confirmed preliminary mapping done by GSS and worked to learn more about a newly created key for inland wetlands of the western U.S. To learn more about this fieldwork and the new wetland key, visit geospatialservices.org/news/.
