S.O.U.L. trips provide memorable experiences
During spring break, 48 Saint Mary’s students and staff participated in immersion trips expanding their understanding of new cultures and learning innovative ways people are addressing poverty and injustice through community. Candace Vogler, Ph.D., David B. and Clara E. Stern Professor of Philosophy and Professor in the College at The University of Chicago, visited the Saint Mary’s University Winona Campus on Feb. 21, 2019, to deliver the second presentation of the Cardinal Virtue series. Saint Mary’s students receive research grants
Four members of the Gamma Epsilon Chapter Beta Beta Beta National Honor Society were recently awarded Research Foundation research grants. Awardees were Lucas Campbell, Bailey O’Hare, Angela Soto, and Erika Thiel. Great work!

Author and Political Commentator Cokie Roberts to give keynote address at Saint Mary’s 2019 Hendrickson Forum
Roberts provides perspectives on humanitarian programs around the world that will inspire us all in our role as global citizens.
MINNEAPOLIS (March 7, 2019) – Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota announced today that its 2019 Hendrickson Forum will feature Cokie Roberts, a New York Times bestselling author and renowned journalist and political commentator for ABC News and NPR. The Tuesday, April 16, 2019, event, “Weaving the Social Safety Net at Home and Around the World,” is presented by Saint Mary’s Hendrickson Institute for Ethical Leadership.
“At the Hendrickson Institute for Ethical Leadership, we strive to encourage leaders with the tools to become creative, ethical, and globally oriented,” says Audrey Kintzi, Saint Mary’s vice president for Advancement and Communication, who leads the Hendrickson Forum. “With her business acumen, historical knowledge, global travels, and experience serving on many important nonprofit boards, Cokie Roberts is well-positioned to share first-hand insights on inspirational programs that are making the world a better place and how they can weave their way into our everyday lives and policies.”
In her more than 40 years in broadcasting, Roberts has won many awards, including three Emmys. Inducted into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame, she was cited by the American Women in Radio and Television as one of the 50 greatest women in the history of broadcasting. Additionally, Roberts has written six New York Times best sellers, most dealing with the roles of women in U.S. history.
Roberts graduated from Wellesley College in 1963, where she earned a degree in political science and now holds more than 25 honorary degrees. Roberts serves on the boards of several nonprofit institutions, including the National Archives Foundation, Mayo Clinic, and Save the Children. In 2008, the Library of Congress named her a “Living Legend,” one of the very few Americans to have attained that honor.
The Hendrickson Forum is held this year on Tuesday, April 16, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., with check-in and networking beginning at 11 a.m. at the Saint Mary’s University Center on the Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota Twin Cities Campus on Park Avenue in Minneapolis. The event is open to the public and general admission tickets are $50 per person, which includes lunch. Advance registration is required. The program also includes a presentation of the Hendrickson Medal for Ethical Leadership. The recipient of that award, given by the Hendrickson Institute for Ethical Leadership, will be announced at a later date.
Cokie Roberts will join a distinguished roster of former speakers: Zanny Minton-Beddoes, Jon Huntsman, Jr., James Stavridis, Sheila Bair, Ian Bremmer, John Micklethwait and more. Past speakers have focused on a range of topics, varying from year to year. Focusing on global migration to microfinance, world-altering events to the new world order, the Hendrickson Forum is a venue for thought-provoking information.

Saint Mary’s student wins national writing contest
Saint Mary’s student Leanna Haag was a recent winner in the Delta Epsilon Sigma (DES) Writing Competition. DES is a national scholastic honor society for Catholic universities. Haag tied for first place in the poetry category with her piece “Individual, Season of Fall(ing), Sing to Me of Wonder, Oregon Trail.” Congratulations!
Former psychology professor to celebrate 90th birthday
George Johnson, John Johnson’s brother, is planning birthday party for John, who turns 90 on April 2. John was a professor in psychology, dean, and was involved in the study abroad program at Saint Mary’s from 1966 to 2008. He is living in Omaha now.

Celebrate St. Paddy’s Day with H3O at the March Jazz Jam
What could be better than celebrating St. Paddy’s Day at Island City Brewing Company? Celebrating St. Paddy’s Day at the monthly Jazz Jam with H3O! The March Jazz Jam will take place on Sunday, March 17, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Now in its second year, the Island City Jazz Jam is an open mic night for jazz. Whether you play an instrument or sing, the Jazz Jam is a chance for anyone to sit in with a professional rhythm section. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to perform some of their favorite jazz standards.
Interested jammers can choose from a wide selection of jazz tunes. Players can choose music from Hal Leonard’s Real Books, bring their own, or ask the trio if they can play their favorite. Simply sign up on the clipboard and get ready to jam.
Island City Jazz Jam is the place to be on the third Sunday of each month. The event is free and open to all ages. And if you’re not quite ready to sit in, come and enjoy a great evening of jazz.

About the H3O Jazz Trio
The father and son jazz trio H3O began performing together when bassist Max Heukeshoven was only 14 years old. Along with older brother Hans on drums and vibes and dad Eric on the piano, the group was asked to play for a private pool party and hasn’t stopped since!
A. Eric Heukeshoven is an assistant professor of music and director of Jazz Studies at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. Hans Heukeshoven is a 2015 graduate of Saint Mary’s with degrees in Music Performance and Computer Science and works as a software engineer. Max Heukeshoven is completing a degree in Music Industry at Saint Mary’s and plans to attend law school.
H3O Jazz Trio performs a wide variety of jazz styles including original music. They have worked as the rhythm section for numerous area professionals including Minnesota Music Hall of Fame’s Les Fields and Dr. John Paulson. Recent appearances include HBC25’s Artwork Winona, Midwest Music Fest, Great River Shakespeare Festival, Free Family Concert Series, and many other venues. The trio hosts a monthly Jazz Jam at Island City Brewing Company in Winona on the third Sunday of every month from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
